Do I need a diagnosis or physician referral to access psychotherapy?
No, physician referral or diagnosis is not required.
What can I expect during my first session?
The first session is for us to get to know each other. We will explore the first few minutes of the session going over some introductory information about therapy. We will also explore the current issues that brought you here, how they impact your life, and your goals, hopes and expectations from working together. You do not need to bring anything to prepare for your first visit, just fill out the online intake questionnaire and consent form and you’ll be ready to go!
How long will psychotherapy take?
The length of therapy depends on your treatment plan, presenting issues and the therapeutic goals set out collaboratively with your therapist. Most clients usually attend 10-12 sessions, with some attending therapy for much longer. Each session can last from 45-50 minutes. Some couple or family sessions may be up to 90 minutes.
Why should I choose virtual psychotherapy?
Virtual psychotherapy allows individuals to receive treatment from the comfort of their own homes or wherever they may be. This can be especially beneficial for individuals who have mobility issues, live in remote areas, or have busy schedules. It allows for greater scheduling flexibility, with therapists offering evening and weekend appointments to accommodate clients' schedules. Some individuals may feel more comfortable sharing personal information in an online setting than in an in-person session. This can lead to greater openness and honesty during therapy sessions. Virtual access is also beneficial for those who may have difficulty attending in-person sessions due to geographic, financial, or other barriers.
Is my privacy & confidentiality protected?
We use Jane app & Zoom for our virtual appointments. Both of these service are PHIPA (Personal Health Information Protection Act) and PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act) compliant. The Zoom application is end-to-end encrypted. Zoom enables “our customers in Canada to be compliant with Canadian Data Protection regulations, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, locally, the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).” It is very important to take responsibility for your privacy. We suggest that you choose a private and quiet space for your counselling sessions. You need to make sure that you and your phone or computer are in a private place. You will need to be conscious of who is nearby or can show up in your private space.
