Individual Therapy - What It Is and What It Does

Psychotherapy is a structured, evidence-based form of mental health treatment in which you work one-on-one with a trained therapist to explore and resolve the emotional, relational, or psychological challenges affecting your life. Unlike a quick fix or symptom patch, psychotherapy goes to the source — helping you understand the patterns beneath your struggles and build the skills to change them.
At Batool Psychotherapy, individual therapy is not open-ended and undirected. It is a purposeful, collaborative process tailored to your specific goals, history, and circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

In Ontario, psychotherapy and counselling are often used interchangeably, but psychotherapy is a regulated act under the Psychotherapy Act, 2007. Registered Psychotherapists (RPs), regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), are trained to assess and treat serious mental health conditions. Both counselling and psychotherapy can be effective, but the regulatory oversight and training requirements for RPs are specific and rigorous.

It depends on what you are working on. Some clients see meaningful change in 8–12 sessions; others work through more complex histories over a longer period. Your therapist will give you an honest picture of what to expect based on your specific goals.

Most clients begin with weekly sessions, which tends to build momentum and strengthen the therapeutic relationship early on. Bi-weekly sessions are common as therapy progresses and goals are achieved. Your therapist will discuss pacing with you from the start.

Yes. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), both offered at Batool Psychotherapy, have strong research support for anxiety and depression. Our therapists will determine the best-fit approach based on your history and presentation.
